How To Repair Winter Damage In The Spring? In the spring you may notice that your lawn is not looking so good. The lawn may look matted, dull, dry, and even thin or bare. This is quite normal and there are things you can do to help your lawn in the spring.

Spring Fertilizing

Spring Fertilizing: The first and most important thing you can do is fertilize the lawn. Fertilizer helps the lawn grow thicker and healthier and will help get rid of that dull and weak appearance. It will also help fend off any fungus and diseases that may be present on the lawn.

Lawn Raking

Lawn Raking: The next best thing to do is give your lawn a stiff raking. The key to this process is to wake the lawn up, dry it out and remove any debris. This process helps prevent the spread of disease and stimulates the roots of the grass. It is also a great way to get some exercise and some outdoor family time.

Spot Seed Bare Spots

Spot Seed Bare Spots: If you have any bare spots in the lawn you can spot seed the bare spots. The best way to do this is to rake out any debris and dead grass in the area you want to seed. Then apply 2-3 inches of triple mix topsoil to the area you want to seed. After you apply the soil, you can spread grass seed over top (3-5 pounds per thousand square feet).

Don’t worry about birds eating some of the seed or the wind blowing it around a little. The key is after you have spread the seed on top of the soil, water it in. This will help the seed get into the soil and connect with it. After you have seeded and done the first watering, keep watering that area every day for two weeks for 30 minutes. If you do that, in two to three weeks the seed will germinate, and the damaged area will look nice and thick.
