April showers bring May flowers (weeds)

We have all heard the expression “April showers bring May flowers.” April is the wettest month of the year and while this is great for the grass, it also generates a lot of weeds as well. Not only that, but April is also the best time to fertilize your lawn as well and this further exacerbates weed problems. The bright side of this problem is that it is actually good for all your weeds to grow at the same time. This way they can all be treated at once, rather than them growing at different rates and at different times. 

Getting weeds to grow is part of the strategy

Dr. Green Services, we like it with all the weeds growing in April, this way we can provide an effective blanket weed treatment to the yard and get very good coverage. Most weed control programs work as a contact treatment, meaning the product needs to contact the leaf to be effective. Thus, we cannot control weeds that we cannot see or that have not grown yet as easily.

For some weeds, there are pre-emergents and growth inhibitors but in most cases, we want to see the weeds so we can treat them all effectively. 

Spring and Fall Weeds

Spring and Fall weeds will grow in many seasons but the two biggest germination periods are spring and fall. It’s not a coincidence that these are also the two wettest seasons. Weeds, just like grass, love water.
