Knowing why, when, and how to seed your lawn will avoid many adverse conditions and will improve the overall look and health of your lawn. Bare or thin patches within a lawn are an open invitation to weed and pest infestations.

How to seed your lawn correctly.

Using the correct type of grass seed (for shade, high traffic, and other conditions…). This is important as the different conditions require a different seed type. Knowing the best time to water your lawn is important; however, there are many facets of good lawn care you need to be aware of.  There are areas of the lawn that may not ever be able to sustain thick grass due to lack of sun, type of plantings, and many other conditions.  Areas under thick shade trees are difficult to have grass grow. Pruning or thinning of the branches may be advised but usually, do not resolve the problem for a prolonged length of time.  These areas should be planted with shade varieties of ground cover, mulch, river rock or other types of ground cover.

How Important is it to Water?

Short answer: Very. Bare areas of lawns encourage the development of weeds. As weeds grow much faster than grass it is imperative to address bare and thin areas promptly.   To know the best time to water your lawn and seeds will ensure success in your efforts. It is best to water early in the morning (between 5:30am – 7:30am) three times per week; however, when new seedlings are just getting established they need more water to support their growing roots. Because of this we always recommend providing water at least once per day for at least 20 minutes.

Remember these 3 rules and you will succeed!

Thick, green lawns have strong root systems which also resist weeds, insects and drought conditions. To keep your lawn in peak condition, follow these three basic tips:

Water the lawn 2 – 3 times a week for 1 hour each time in each area during the day so the water reaches the root system thereby increasing the depth of the root.

“The deeper the root the greener the grass”.  Cutting the lawn at the highest level of the lawn mower is also imperative to a thick green lawn.

“The longer the grass above ground…the deeper the root below ground and of course the deeper the root the greener the grass”. Open or bare areas of lawn will encourage the development of weeds. As weeds grow five times faster than grass it is imperative to address bare and thin areas with the customer.
