New to lawn care? Don’t fret.

With just a few easy steps, you can be the envy of your neighbours. A beautiful, green, vibrant lawn is achievable by anyone with the right care. We’ve put together a beginner’s seasonal guide to lawn care to help you with year-round care for your grass, trees, shrubs and entire yard.

Spring

An important season for lawn is spring because it’s growing season and time to get ready for the mowing ahead. The snow has melted, the ice has thawed and now it’s time to get your equipment tuned up, charged, oiled and filled with gas.

Sharpen Mower Blades

Sharpen the blades of your mower so they are ready to cut grass with ease and precision.

Test Lawn pH Levels

Test your lawn to determine the pH levels of acidity and alkalinity. If you need to make the soil less acidic, add lime.

Aerate

Perforate your lawn with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to make their way to grass roots.

Fertilize

Apply fertilizer to benefit your overall soil composition without impacting the turf below. Address uneven terrain, soil compaction, bare spots and nutrient depletion.

Summer

The summer is when your grass grows high and needs to be cut and watered regularly.

Water Regularly

In general, it’s wise to give your grass 1” inch of water per week. But during the summer, you can maintain a schedule of every four-to-five days depending on the rain.

Cut Your Grass Higher

As your grass grows higher, it’s best to cut it higher too. Maintain a height of 2 to 2.5” and adjust your blades accordingly.

Autumn

In the Autumn, the most important aspect of lawn care is removing the organic and synthetic materials that accumulate in your yard over the summer and get your grass ready to lay dormant during the winter.

Rake Leaves and Remove Debris

Make sure to rake all the leaves and any other organic material from your lawn to stop it from coating your lawn as the weather cools. Remove moss and any synthetic materials obstructing grass.

Aerate

Perforate your lawn with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to make their way to grass roots using an aeration tool.

Apply a Top Seed

Add a thin layer of high grade seen to your lawn to impact the overall soil composition without negatively impacting the turf below.

Winter

During the winter, the best lawn care is simply keeping everything put away and untouched.

Reduce Traffic

Keep traffic on your lawn to a minimum. If your grass gets trampled while it lies dormant under the snow it can lead to uneven terrain and bare spots come spring.

Store Equipment

Store your equipment somewhere safe and dry like a garage or shed to keep it safe from the elements.
