Spring Fertilizing

Spring Fertilizing is the most important step to having a thick, green, healthy lawn. Spring fertilizing helps get essential nutrients that the lawn needs down to the root system. Most fertilizers will include some combination of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. While nitrogen feeds the lawn and helps it grow thick and healthy, phosphorous and potassium help the root system develop.

Why Fertilize?

The main reason to fertilize in the spring is that is when the lawn comes out of winter dormancy and begins to grow it needs the right nutrients to develop properly. Regarding this, fertilizer essentially helps the grass “wake up” and start turning green. Additionally, the nutrients applied from the fertilizer help the lawn fight off any fungus and disease that could be the result of excess spring moisture.

To make the most of your spring fertilizer treatment it is also recommended to give your lawn a stiff raking. Stiff raking will help the lawn wake up quicker and help prevent fungus from growing on the lawn.

What Is The Best Type Of Spring Fertilizer?

There is no “one type fits all” when it comes to fertilizer. The exact breakdown of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium needed in a fertilizer varies greatly from region to region. As a rule, slow-release granular fertilizer is best for the first application of the year. Slow-release granular means that the fertilizer releases its nutrients gradually over a period of 1 to 5 weeks. This helps sustain an equal amount of nutrition over a long period of time. After this first granular treatment, many companies will switch to a liquid fertilizer after. This is beneficial because it works quickly to sustain any drop-off in nutrition and it also helps to broadcast weed control across the entire lawn during the weed season.

Hiring A Company Or Doing it Yourself?

At Dr. Green Services we obviously recommend hiring a company over doing it yourself, and it’s not just for the obvious reason that it benefits us ? When you fertilize yourself, you risk burning the lawn. Also, most over-the-shelf fertilizer products are not of very good quality. They are usually fast-release, meaning they green the lawn up fast like a steroid. This is not healthy at all, and it leads to serious long-term problems.
