One of the best ways to keep your trees and shrubs healthy is to provide a deep root tree and shrub feeding every spring and fall. This is because tree and shrub feeding helps bring much-needed nutrition to the tree’s and shrub’s roots before and after the growing season.

Most lawn care programs include a combination of seasonal fertilizing, weed control, and insect control because these are the common issues that affect home lawns. Trees and shrubs it is very similar. A good tree and shrub plan will include spring and fall fertilizing and seasonal protection against damaging insects and fungus. 

Overall, your trees and shrubs will become healthier and more resistant to disease and insect infestation. In addition, Dr. Green recommends deep root feeding a minimum of twice a year, Spring and Fall. This will give your trees and shrubs the nutrients needed to grow to their full potential and offer them protection over winter. Feeding in the spring helps them grow lush and green in the summer, and feeding in the fall makes them more resistant to pests and diseases. Much like home lawns, feeding in the fall also leaves some nutrients available in the soil for rapid uptake in the spring. 

In addition to seasonal fertilizing, ornamental trees and shrubs require regular insect and disease treatments. These treatments usually come in foliar sprays that help prevent insects and diseases from infesting the plant. Some common insects affecting trees and shrubs in Texas, Illinois, and Indiana are aphids, scales, spider mites, bagworms, and beetles. Some common diseases are leaf spots, rust, blight, and root rot.

The best way to protect your landscape against most of these issues is to apply preventative systemic foliar insect and disease treatments in the spring and summer when insect and disease activity is most prevalent. ​
