7 Best Tips to Maintain Your Yard During Autumn

The weather is cooling down and the leaves are beginning to fall. Autumn is a season filled with its own lawn care challenges but there are a few steps you can take to make the process simple and easy. Here are our seven best tips to maintain your yard during Autumn.

1.Remove Debris

Is your lawn covered in leaves and other organic and synthetic materials? It’s not uncommon to find your property covered in debris come Autumn, especially with trees losing their foliage and the wind blowing. Get rid of anything obscuring your grass from receiving the nutrients it needs to flourish and add any organic material to your compost. This helps to fight against uneven terrain and bare spots.

2. Pull Weeds

If you want to control the growth and spread of weeds then it’s best to pull them from root to stem. In doing so, you can fight against them coming back in Spring with a vengeance. Pull any and all weeds you find and add them to the compost too.

3. Rake Moss

Trees without leaves signify that it’s time to find the moss that’s been hiding. Moss thrives in the least sunny areas of your property, so check those spots first. Remove the moss as you find it to control its growth and spread.

4. Aerate

One of the most important ways to maintain your yard during Autumn is to aerate. Using an aerating tool, perforate your grass with tiny holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to make their way to grassroots. In doing so, you can help your lawn lie dormant underneath the snow as the weather cools.

5. Apply a Top Dressing

Before Winter comes, apply a thin layer of top seed to your lawn to fight against soil compaction, uneven terrain, and bare spots. In doing so, you can improve the overall soil quality without impacting turf below.

6. Use a Pre-emergent Herbicide

Use a pre-emergent herbicide to stop weeds dead in their tracks. Apply a final treatment in Autumn to disallow the seeds of weeds to germinate without negatively impacted already established and existing plants.

7. Keep Traffic to a Minimum

In addition to keeping your lawn debris-free, keep it as people-free as possible too. Human traffic can cause soil compaction that leads to uneven terrain and bare spots come Spring.
