There’s always work to do on the lawn, no matter the time of year.

By understanding seasonal lawn care you can make each season on the lawn feel like a breeze. We’ve put together a complete guide to lawn care to help you with year-round care for your grass, trees, shrubs, and entire yard.

Spring

Spring is where seasonal lawn care begins. It is growing season and time to prepare for the mowing ahead. Now that the snow has melted, and the ice has thawed, you’ll want to ensure your mower, trimmer, spreader, and any other equipment is tuned up, charged, and filled with gas.

Sharpen Mower Blades

Sharpen the blades of your mower, so they are ready to cut grass with ease and precision. Remember, dull blades rip the grass up and that can lead to disease.

Test Lawn pH Levels

Test your lawn to determine the pH levels of acidity and alkalinity. If you need to make the soil less acidic, add lime, this is critical in making the soil ideal for healthy growth in your lawn.

Aerate

Perforate your lawn with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to make their way to grassroots. Spring is an ideal time for this, as opposed to the hot and dry summer months. In spring aeration is a great technique to encourage the growth to come.

Fertilize

Apply fertilizer to benefit your overall soil composition without impacting the turf below. Address uneven terrain, soil compaction, bare spots, and nutrient depletion. If you are uncertain about the correct formulation for a good spring fertilizer don’t hesitate to call a professional for help.

Summer

Summer is primetime for mowing. In these hotter months, you’ll want to water and cut your grass regularly.

Water Regularly

In general, it’s wise to give your grass 1” inch of water per week. But during the summer, you can maintain a schedule of every four-to-five days depending on the rain, but make sure that water isn’t left sitting on your lawn for long periods of time. This can be ensured by watering during the day.

Cut Your Grass Higher

As your grass grows higher, it’s best to cut it higher too. Maintain a height of 2 to 2.5”, and adjust your blades accordingly.

Autumn

In the Autumn, the most important aspect of lawn care is removing the organic and synthetic materials that accumulate in your yard and getting your grass ready to lay dormant during the winter.

Rake Leaves and Remove Debris

Make sure to rake all the leaves and any other organic material from your lawn to stop it from coating your lawn as the weather cools. Remove moss and any synthetic materials obstructing grass.

Aerate

Perforate your lawn with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to make their way to grassroots. This is great way to provide your lawn with extra nutrients before it goes dormant for the winter.

Apply a Top Seed

Add a thin layer of high grade seeds to your lawn to impact the overall soil composition without negatively impacting the turf below.

Winter

Seasonal lawn care comes to an end during winter, where the best lawn care is simply keeping everything put away and untouched.

Reduce Traffic

Keep traffic on your lawn to a minimum. If your grass gets trampled while it lies dormant under the snow, this can lead to uneven terrain and bare spots come spring.

Store Equipment

Store your equipment somewhere safe and dry like a garage or shed to keep it safe from the elements.
